1. Nightmares

“Hey darlin’” the deep voice and the large calloused hands running lightly over her naked body roused her from sleep.
“Hmmm” she moaned, her cerulean blue eyes opening to meet his deep hazy ones.
“What time is it?” she asked, turning to nuzzle into him, his soft chest hair tickling her nose, causing it to twitch.

“Time for us ta get goin’” he answered, running his hand through her hair and lowering his head to kiss her smooth cheek and breathe in her scent. It drove him wild every time he smelled her like this, her own vanilla and sandalwood scent mixed with his cigars, sweat and leather. There was something very primal about it, something which cried out that she was his. ‘Mine’ the animal in him growled.
“Stop smelling me” she chided knowing what he was doing. He did it frequently, especially after a night of passionate lovemaking. “I stink.”
“Na darlin’, ya smell good”
“Sure. You just like smelling yourself on me” she responded hitting him lightly on his raised shoulder.
He chuckled and grabbed her free hand, trapping it in his chest as he hugged her tighter. “Is that so bad?” he asked taking another deep breath of their mixed scents.

“No, not at all” she whispered, blushing at his possessiveness. He was unlike any man she had ever met. He was rough and hard with a no nonsense attitude, but at the same time he could be as innocent and vulnerable as a child. That he opened that side of himself only to her, made her feel proud of her achievement.
“So where are we going today?” she asked, snaking her hand into his chest, curling and uncurling her long fingers.
“Grrr” he growled in appreciation. “Wherever ya wanta go?”
“North” she suggested. “You promised to take me.”
“That I did and one day I’ll take ya” he responded, once again nuzzling into her hair. “Just a few more days and then we’ll leave. We need ta have the money if we wanta get food and stuff ta last the whole winter up there.”
“OK” she agreed. “Just the two of us, whatever will we do?” she asked placing her finger on her chin and trying to mimic deep thinking.
“Oh I have a few plans ya might like,” he said, flashing his long canines in a devilish grin.
“Really” she sounded shocked. Winking at him, she ran a finger along his jaw. “Mind telling me about them”
“It’d be better if I show ya” he said, drawing her closer.

-----

“Is this normal?” asked the man standing next to the bed. “She is smiling.”
“Yes” The second voice belonged to a shorter woman wearing a doctor’s robe. “Her vitals are normal. She is just dreaming, a happy one it seems.”
“When do we revive her?” asked the man.
“Usually we don’t need to revive her, she comes out of it herself” answered the woman, checking her vitals once again.

----

“Fuck,” the man grunted as air escaped from the truck’s left rear tire. They were getting close. There was no way out – for him. He could still try to save her. No, he *will* save her, no ‘try to’ shit. She was too pure, too innocent for them. They would destroy her.

Braking hard, he brought the truck to a halt, both of them getting out in an instant. They held hands and ran towards the trees. Reaching there, he turned to her.
“Ya run and hide darlin’, I’ll take care of them,” he ordered.
“No” She was adamant. “We will do it together. We did it before and we will do it again.”
“Not this time babe….not this time,” he said pushing her towards the trees. “Run darlin’”
“No” she shook her head trying to convince him, tears welling in her eyes.
“Yes” he countered strongly before softening. “Fer me” he whispered to her, brushing one escaped tear away.
“I’ll find ya. I promise” he said giving her a small smile.
“You promise” she repeated his words.
He pulled her to him for a passionate kiss. Their last kiss, his mind told him. The beast in him was crying blood, howling at the loss of its mate.
“Yes, I promise” he growled softly at her mouth. “Now go,” he commanded once again, pushing her towards the trees.

----

“What happened? One second she is smiling and the next she is sweating, tears flowing from her eyes,” said the man. “Now don’t tell me this is also normal.”
“It is” commented the woman, noting her pulse and blood pressure.
“We need to revive her immediately,” responded the man to his companion’s seemingly indifferent attitude.
“NO” came the sharp command. “She needs to ride this out on her own. Believe me it is completely normal” ended the woman, placing a supportive hand on the patient’s arm, “I hope” she whispered under her breath.

---

She could see everyone and everything from her vantage point high in the trees, but no one could see or sense her. No one except him; he could catch and track her smell from miles away.
But he was busy at the moment – busy fighting – for her freedom. Her freedom was the only thing left in his bestial mind. Her deep blue eyes and long white hair and their freedom. He would gladly give his life for them in an instant and today seemed like a good day to die. With a loud roar, he jumped on the men hunting him.

She observed silently, tears streaming down her face as he roared and attacked his attackers. He surprised them and managed to get a few, before the others recovered and started firing at him. His stocky body became airborne as hundreds of bullets hit him, their combined momentum lifting him from the ground.

She couldn’t take it anymore. Reaching out a hand to try and grasp him, she cried out.

----

“LOGAN” she cried out, ending her nightmare – her hand extending to grasp empty space.
